In Honor of Moms Everywhere

mothers_day.jpg

I have encountered many moms and their families in my career.  From moms that are family planning, pregnant, all the way to their children getting married and starting their own family.  In lieu of Mother’s day I would like to dedicate this article to all moms.  Here is my favorite Mother’s Day poem:

A MOTHER’S LOVE

Love is the only bow on life’s dark cloud.  It is the morning and Evening Star.  It shines upon the cradle of the babe, and sheds its radiance upon the quiet tomb.  It is the mother of art, inspirer of poet, patriot and philosopher.  It is the air and light of every heart, builder of every home, kindler of every fire on every hearth.  It was the first dream of immortality.  It fills the world with melody…Love is the magician, the enchanter, that changes worthless things to joy, and makes right royal kings of common clay.

-Robert Ingersoll

Look what your mom had to put up with:

 Pregnancy-

·       Gained weight

·       Couldn’t Sit Up

·       Swollen Ankles

·       Couldn’t Breath

·       Hemorrhoids

·       Back Pain

·       Labor

·       Passed a Bowling Ball

·       Dirty Diapers

·       Up All Night

·       Endless Worrying

·       Stayed Home

·       Cooking & Car Pools

·       French Fries Between the Seats & In the Purse

·       Endless Whining (father and kids)

·       Heard the Word “Mom” 4,656,111 Times (on average)

Moms deserve the best health and the healthiest families.

Why a Fitness Walking Program Is Necessary

Why a Fitness Walking Program Is Necessary

fitness.jpg

You  always hear me say, “walk for 5 minutes after your adjustment.”  This is important to help the adjustment “set” and help create muscle and joint memory so the adjustment holds and last longer.  The most important thing you can do after an adjustment, period.  But walking above and beyond that is valuable as well.  So keeping with this month’s theme of physical activity lets discuss starting a walking fitness program that not only will help with your chiropractic care, but also overall fitness.

You know you want to begin a fitness program, but don't know where to start. It's easy with these tips from http://www.thewalkingsite.com.

How to start: First of all, start out slow and easy. Just walk outside your door for 10 minutes, and walk back. That's it? Yes, that's it. Do this every day for a week. If this was easy for you, add five minutes to your walks next week (total walking time 25 minutes). Keep adding 5 minutes until you are walking as long as desired.

Watch your posture. Walk tall. Think of elongating your body. Hold your head up and eyes forward. Your shoulders should be down, back and relaxed. Tighten your abdominal muscles and buttocks and fall into a natural stride.

Be sure to drink plenty of water before, during and after walking. Stretch well after your walk. Stretching will make you feel great and assist in injury prevention.

To improve cardiovascular fitness you should walk 3 to 4 days a week, 20 to 30 minutes at a very fast pace.

If you are walking for weight loss you should walk a minimum of five days a week, 45 to 60 minutes at a brisk pace.
